Chutneys and Pickles

Monday October 4th 6:00 PM

Kitchen Fantasy welcomes Smita, food column writer for the Immigrant Magazine.  Originally from   India  , Smita has lived in the   US  for more than 25 years.  She is well known for her simple Indian recipes and has been written about in the   Los Angeles  times as well as the Orange County Register.  Smita is also the founder of Neemo’s Exotic Ice creams, a brand of Indian style ice cream and Saffron Spot, a popular snack bar in Artesia which features her exotic ice cream creations and other unique foods and desserts.

Chutneys and Pickles are as important to Indian cuisine as the main dishes.  They are eaten as a condiment to enhance a meal.  They are similar in consistency to jelly, salsa or relish and can be sweet or sour.  They are usually made fresh, but can often be made ahead of time.  They can be either cooked or made with fresh, raw ingredients.

Chutneys and pickles make interesting side dishes and condiments from appetizers to desserts.  They can range from sweet to mild to very spicy.  They can be smooth (like a paste) or chunky.

In this class we will make several different chutneys.  Each of you will also get to take home a chutney sample (4 oz) of each chutney home for your family to enjoy
